Charles Allen Cherry of LaPorte Colorado, also known as Chuck, Grandpa Cherry, and Poudre River Charlie, passed away peacefully on June 14th 2020 with his Daughter Cindy at his side.
Charles was born on August 28th, 1937 in Bristol, Colorado and moved to Loveland with his parents and siblings in 1956. He was a proud Colorado native and he celebrated “82 anniversaries of his birthday”. Charles married Pearl Veneer Frank, on April 15th, 1956, in Loveland after meeting her at the Church of Christ. Charles lived in Loveland in the early years, then in Boyd Gulch in the Poudre Canyon, and eventually settling down in LaPorte in 1980.
Charles was very active and lived to climb mountains including 46 of the 54 14ers in the State, all past the age of 50 years old. His last climb in February was up Palisade Mountain west of Loveland where the ashes of his Mother and Father are located. Charles was an active member of the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, in Bellvue, Colorado and he loved to ride his bike there on Sunday mornings as much as possible. Charles was a retired auto mechanic and made a name for himself working on Saab’s. He had many trophies from drag racing in his younger years. If he wasn’t hiking, hunting, or fishing, you could probably find him tinkering in his back yard on many ongoing projects he had or visiting his many grandchildren. He was fond of McDonalds, usually ordering a diet coke, and visited as many as he could. His favorite gifts were coins, matchbox cars, and roses to his grandchildren.
Charles is survived by his Siblings Richard F. Cherry, III (wife Sharon) of Austin, TX, Robert (Bill) W. Cherry and Margo S. Kirpatrick (husband Ron) of Loveland, and Danny R. Cherry of Westcliffe Colorado. He is also survived by his children Cynthia (Cindy) G. Black (husband Ron) and Carol L. Haws of Greeley Colorado, Diane C. Merritt (Dan Allen) of Polaris, Montana, and James A. Cherry (wife Julia) of Loveland Colorado. Charles had 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his wife Pearl, his parents Richard F. Cherry, II and Maxine C. Cherry, his siblings Darrell J. Cherry, Donna L. Gruenwald, Darlene “Ann” Sicklebower, son-in-law Ron W. Merritt and his first grandchild Mathew D. Cox.
An invitation only memorial service will be held at Viegut Funeral Home on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at 1:00pm. A larger celebration of his life is planned for some time later this fall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, 5220 Rist Canyon Rd, Bellvue, CO 80512. Please submit memorable stories and photos to James Cherry at 2648 Glendale Drive, Loveland, CO 80538 or at the email address email@example.com.
