Walter John Smela, 75, passed away on Friday September 6, 2019 at his home in the Good Samaritan Village of Loveland, CO. Walt was born on February 23, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan to Walter & Helen Smela while his father was serving overseas in the Second World War.
Walter graduated from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory School in 1962 and enlisted in the US Army in May of 1963. After training as a tank crewman, he served state-side, as well as overseas in Germany and two tours in Korea. He met Carolyn Dusin while stationed at Fort Riley and they married in her home church in Stuttgart, Kansas in 1969. Upon his return from Korea, Walt was honorably discharged and enlisted in the Colorado National Guard. Walt spent his career with the US Postal Service, working until his retirement in 1999.
Walt was an avid hunter, fisherman and sports fan. He always rooted for the Detroit Tigers and the Denver Broncos. He had a deep faith and love of the Lord, as well as his loving wife and family.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his two brothers Gerald and Sydney. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn; and his two sons Brian and wife Jennifer (Fort Collins) and Jonathan and wife Adrienne (Loveland). He is also survived by four grandchildren – Katherine, Curtis, Nicholas & Levi Smela.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Loveland on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 10:30am, with a reception at the church following Mass. Walt's inurnment will be held at the Loveland Burial Park Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that, in his honor, you either make a donation to Orchard Lake St Mary’s School or to a charity of your preference.
