Kate passed away on the morning of May 17, 2018 in Loveland, Colorado. Kate was born June 25, 1932 to Mable P. (Streeter) and Vernon Stewart in Woodston, Kansas. When born, she was the 100th resident in Woodston. Kate was raised in Stockton, Kansas. She graduated from Stockton High School, Stockton, Kansas in 1950 and graduated from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas in 1954. Kate was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. She played trombone in her high school band and college band. Kate continued with her graduate studies in 1955.
Kate loved her sports, especially softball. She played fast-pitch softball and was well known as an outstanding pitcher in her younger years. During the 1960’s, she coached high school aged girls softball. She took great pride in her team known as the Mustangs. They traveled to many games across Kansas and to the State Tournament. Kate also enjoyed bowling. She bowled on a City League and a Traveling League.
Kate started her 40 year working career at Larned State Hospital in Larned, Kansas in 1954. She taught ceramics for two years, was then hired as the Recreation Director for 18 years, and went on to be the Director of the Activity Therapy Department for 20 years. Kate retired in 1994. In 1996, she moved to Loveland, Colorado to enjoy retirement.
When residing in Larned, she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Kate was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, Ralph Whited and a nephew, Brett Rouse. She is survived by a half-sister, Ethel Rouse of Larned, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. Kate also leaves behind her extended family, Sarah Lloyd, Barbara (Kevin) Racette, and Scott Racette, all of Loveland, Colorado. To many other extended family members she was considered their sister and was called Aunt Kate by many. She will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at Viegut Funeral Home on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 2:00pm with a reception following at the Viegut Reception Center. Burial service will be held on Monday, June 4, 2018 in Larned, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributing to the Patient Benefit Fund/Greenhouse at Larned State Hospital c/o Viegut Funeral Home at 1616 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, Colorado 80538.
