Hazel Backe an extraordinary spouse, mother, grandmother, sister, friend and employee who brightened the lives of everyone she cared for and loved, died Sept, 18, 2018, in Loveland Colorado. She was 69.
Hazel Backe was born on January 6, 1949, in Kenosha Wisconsin to Sievert Allan Backe and Goldie Minnie Poppe. She graduated from Tremper High in 1967. Hazel Backe and Hope Chrismas met while working together at Zion Hospital in Zion Illinois. They pioneered a Civil Union and lovingly raised 3 children together. Lorie Marie Valencia, James Arthur Chrismas and Wendy Rae Jones. Hazel and Hope were together for 45 years.
Hazel and Hope raised their children in Fort Collins where Hazel worked for many many years in the medical field. She loved her job. The physicians, nurses, staff, patients and hospital volunteers that she worked with all became her friends. Hazel enjoyed spending time with her spouse, children, best friends of over 35 years, Nicki Sims and Rozanne Blake, United family reunions, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, loving neighbors, and friends near and far who all became family. She loved fishing, biking, playing cards, playing her guitar, singing, playing softball, watching football, traveling and cheering on her grandchildren. Cory Richard Castaneda, Ashleigh Elizabeth Chandler (Wade Chandler) Jacob Allan Chrismas, Sarah Marie Valencia, Colton David Valencia, Cody Alexander Chrismas, Jesse Michael Bennett and Logan Gregory Jones on through every step of their lives.
Hazel was a big fan of sports, rooting on the Denver Broncos, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, Greenbay Packers and loved watching her nephew, Brandon Backe pitch professionally. Hazel never missed the opportunity to attend a game whether it be professional or watching her grandchildren during their school years. She also enjoyed westerns and had a special place in her heart for John Wayne.
On July 17, 2018 Hazel became a first time Great Grandmother to Rowan Blake Chandler and couldn’t have been more proud. She always loved babies and was very tender and soothing to all her grandchildren.
Hazel is survived by her wife Hope Chrismas, three children, 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, Siblings Harriot Onan (Tom Onan) Howard Backe, Harold Backe and Hope McNamara. Christine Reband (Randy Reband) Rick Wojcik (Tony Wojcik) Karen Creed. She was adored by many nieces, nephews, friends, family and loved ones. She will be greatly missed by all and forever loved.
A celebration of life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 400 E. 4th street, Loveland Colorado on October 7th, 2018 at 2:00pm.
